What could the future hold for the Philadelphia Phillies and Rhys Hoskins?
With the emergence of the Philadelphia Phillies new first baseman, Bryce Harper, Rhys Hoskins’ future with the Phillies has begun to become a giant question mark. Especially with the recent comments by Bryce Harper saying he would be willing to make the move to first base permanent.
With Rhys Hoskins having missed the entirety of the season so far due to tearing his ACL on a non-contact play in spring training.
I remember watching this live and thought he just slipped at first, but once I saw him still down. You could just feel this wasn’t good. Rhys Hoskins has been a big piece of this team and one of the longest tenured players on this roster behind Aaron Nola. Every fan in Philadelphia still gets goosebumps watching this hit and can watch over and over again.
While Hoskins is slated to become a free agent after this season, he is absolutely focused on returning and potentially helping this club get back to the World Series if he can play. A lot of updates on Hoskins have consistently put him ahead of schedule. Having Hoskins back around the club in general has given the club a huge boost, but if he can get back into a batter’s box at least once this season, it could alter any sort of projection this team has in a positive way.
Hoskins is a leader in this clubhouse and brings more to the table than just a bat.
Just hearing what Hoskins has to say tells you how much he cares about this team. Hoskins has poured a lot of his blood, sweat and tears into the red pinstripes, but also the City of Brotherly Love as well. Hoskins has made it a point to give back alongside his wife and has never looked back.
Year after year, Rhys and his wife Jayme have made it a point to get into the community and do something for the city even though he hasn’t been playing.
Everything that was said about Hoskins after his injury indicates just how much of a boost he would bring.
Even with what he means to this team, where exactly could Rhys Hoskins fit into the Phillies’ plans for the future?
Even if Harper remains at first base full time, the DH position could be filled by Kyle Schwarber moving forward thanks to the high potential shown by the young players in the outfield.
That being said, moving Hoskins to the outfield is also a potential answer. However, even in the outfield, Hoskins wasn’t the best defensive option either. However, he is still a better option than Schwarber. The Phillies have definitely missed Hoskins’ production over the course of the season.
On a full season average, Hoskins is slashing .242/.353/.492. Hoskins also has 95 runs and 98 RBI with 36 home runs. While Hoskins is extremely streaky, when his bat gets hot, he is one of the best hitters in the league.
While Hoskins could be a cheap option to resign, it just depends on whether or not it makes sense for Hoskins to return to the Phillies. I, for one, would take Hoskins back as a cheap option. It would allow Alec Bohm to stay at third base full time and would give Harper an opportunity to have a day off. Again, it depends on whether or not Dave Dombrowski believes Harper is the future at first base and whether or not he believes Hoskins can still be a difference-maker.
