Alex Rodriguez Begins Rehab Assignment Tonight

Alex Rodriguez is set to begin his minor league rehab assignment today and is expected to return for the Yankees next Thursday when they kick off their series against the Twins.

Originally, New York had hoped to have their slugger back for Monday’s series opener against the Royals, but manager Joe Girardi says the team has no intentions of rushing Rodriguez along.

"“We’ll have to build him up,” Girardi said. “I think the most important thing is that he feels comfortable and that he feels that he’s moving freely.”"

Rodriguez has been out since early July recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery.  The procedure was decided upon after it was discovered A-Rod was dealing with a torn meniscus in his right knee.

After playing the role of designated hitter tonight, Rodriguez will hit the field tomorrow manning third base for the Yankees’ minor league affiliate.

Just after resuming baseball related activities last week, Rodriguez was launched back into the national spotlight for another non-baseball related incident.

The slugger’s reported involvement in illegal poker rings has caused much attention, but it appears nothing will come of it as far as suspensions or fines go.  Still, A-Rod is set to meet with Major League officials likely before he rejoins the Yankees next week to discuss the allegations.
