Denard Span Returns to DL

Denard Span still isn’t right and the Twins have sent him back to the disabled list.  The outfielder is dealing with migraines that have clearly impacted his recent performance.

"“I get foggy and dizzy at times, and feel fatigued,” Span said. “It’s not easy for me to get going, even when I wake up in the morning. It’s just a combination of things. I don’t feel as bad as I did a few months ago, so I don’t think it’s all from the concussion, because it’s migraines that have lingered.”"

A concussion sustained during a home plate collision with Royals catcher Brayan Pena caused Span to miss significant time earlier this season.  Span just rejoined the Twins at the beginning of the month, but has only managed to go 2 for 35 since returning.

But according to Minnesota trainer Rick McWane, Span’s current ailments are not remnants of the concussion, but instead a problem the 27 year old has been dealing with for some time now.

"“This is something very similar to episodes he’s been having the last few years dating back to ’09,” McWane said. “These are not concussion symptoms. The concussion stirred up a previous existing condition, which spurs migraines that don’t cause headaches, but dizziness and vertigo.”"

To replace Span on their roster, the Twins recalled Luke Hughes from Triple-A.

Hughes was expected take over in the outfield last night, but missed his flight after sitting at the wrong gate.  Without Hughes, Minnesota was forced to pencil in Joe Mauer as their starting right fielder.
