Nate Schierholtz Hits DL with Fractured Foot

Nate Schierholtz has been placed on the San Francisco Giants’ 15 day disabled list with a fractured right foot.  The roster move cleared a spot for the addition of Double-A pitcher Eric Surkamp, who made his Major League debut Saturday night against the Astros.

Schierholtz sustained the injury during an August 15th game in Atlanta when he fouled a pitch off his foot.  Schierholtz took a day off, but then was back in the Giants’ lineup through last Sunday.  After that game Schierholtz was again forced to sit as the foot became too painful to play on.

San Francisco kept Schierholtz with the team, hoping he could avoid a trip to the DL.  But after testing his foot Friday night, Schierholtz told the team his discomfort remained.

On the year, Schierholtz has hit at a clip of .278/.326/.430 with 32 extra base hits, 41 RBI’s and 42 runs scored.  He becomes the 20th different Giants’ player to hit the disabled list this year.

Surkamp, Schierholtz’s roster replacement, was solid in his ML debut.  Over his 6 innings of work, Surkamp held the Astros to a single run on 6 hits, walking three and striking out 4.
