Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jose Tabata has been diagnosed with a small fracture in his left hand and will be out for at least 10 days, resting the hand and receiving treatment.  After the 10 days, Tabata will be reexamined by the Pirates medical staff.

Tabata has been out since Monday when he exited the Pirates game against the Houston Astros early after experiencing discomfort in his left wrist.

This marks Tabata’s second stretch of extended time he will miss this season.  Back at the end of June, Tabata strained his right quad and was out of action until the middle of August.

While the injury problems must be disappointing for the 23 year old, Tabata did earn himself some job security this season.

Soon after returning from his first trip to the DL, Tabata and the Pirates came to an agreement on a 6 year contract extension.  The deal is guaranteed through 2016 and the Pirates hold three option years beyond that.

Tabata has hit at a clip of .266/.349/.362 with 23 extra base hits, 21 RBI’s, 53 runs scored and 16 stolen bases over his 91 games for the Pirates this season.
