Wilson Ramos Returns to Venezuelan Winter League

Less than two weeks after he was kidnapped from his home at gunpoint, Wilson Ramos returned to the baseball diamond.  Tuesday night, Ramos made his 2011 debut for the Aragua Tigers of the Venezuelan winter league.

Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reported that in his return to baseball, Ramos went 0-5 for the Tigers during their 6-4 loss.  No one ever wants to go 0 for anything at the plate, but Ramos’s performance yesterday is insignificant.  What really matters is that this guy is back and playing at all after going through such a traumatic experience.

On the 9th of November, Ramos was kidnapped by a pair of armed gunmen outside of his Venezuelan home.  There was little word on the situation over the next two days before it was reported that Ramos had been rescued.  51 hours after he was taken, Ramos was set free by a team of 30 Venezuelan commandoes.

Soon after being returned to his family, Ramos was back in action, not taking any time off from the game he loves.  After being evaluated in Washington by the Nationals, Ramos returned to practice for the Tigers.

Ramos finished fourth in National League Rookie of the Year voting this season after hitting at a clip of .267/.334/.445 with 15 home runs and 52 RBI’s for the Nationals.

The 24-year-old said his primary focus is getting back to baseball and putting the kidnapping behind him.  Ramos certainly took a big step toward this goal last night.
