Greg Halman’s Funeral Scheduled for Tuesday

MLB.com has announced that the funeral services for Greg Halman, the Mariners outfielder killed last week, will be held this Tuesday just outside of his hometown of Haarlem in the Netherlands.  Halman’s family is also holding a public viewing Sunday in a Haarlem gym.

Last Monday morning, news came out of the Netherlands reporting that Halman was found in a home in Rotterdam with a stab wound.  Paramedics tried to stop the bleeding, but were ultimately unable to resuscitate Halman.

Halman’s brother Jason was arrested as the primary suspect.  Few details have emerged, but Halman’s brother is still being held.  The Associated Press is reporting that Jason has been ordered to be detained for at least two more weeks on suspicion of murder or manslaughter.

All that is known at this point is that authorities believe loud music is what caused Halman to head downstairs into his brother’s apartment.

Three members of the Mariners will be present at Halman’s services, Bob Engle, Seattle’s vice president of international operations, Wayne Norton, the club’s coordinator of European scouting, and Peter Van Dalen, the Mariners associate scout in the Netherlands.

Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik told MLB.com that Halman had “an immense amount of talent” and that the Mariners were “just waiting for it all to come together”.  Growing up in Europe, Zduriencik said Halman came into the game of baseball late, but he could tell the “growth was coming”.

But beyond baseball, Zduriencik said Halman offered so much more.  According to Zduriencik, Halman “was a great personality”.  The GM said that “every other thing is secondary when you realize you’re not going to see him anymore”.
