The Boston Red Sox acquired minor league right hander Pedro Beato from the Mets earlier this week to complete the Kelly Shoppach trade. With Beato headed to Triple-A Pawtucket, the Sox organization had to make some room for him. As a result, right hander Mark Prior has been released.

Prior, now 31, hasn’t thrown a major league pitch since 2006 due to a series of injuries. He posted an impressive 13.7 strikeouts per nine innings in just 25 innings of work. Unfortunately, he also walked 8.3 hitters per nine. The hard numbers? 23 walks in 25 innings. Yep, that will get you released in Triple-A, even if you used to be Mark Prior.
