Mark Teixeira to Miss Time with Calf Injury

New York Yankees’ first baseman Mark Teixeira left Monday night’s game against Toronto with a strained calf. The Blue Jays wound up winning the game in extra innings. Teixeira apparently injured the calf during an at bat in the fourth inning. He drew a walk and eventually scored a run in the frame, but was limping badly on his way around the bases. Instead of waiting, the Yankees sent him to New York Presbyterian Hospital for an MRI right away.

According to Sweeny Murti, Teixeira’s MRI came back as a Grade 1 strain. Teixeira expects to miss at least a week and possibly two.

The loss of Teixeira is obviously big and the Yankees felt the effects even before the game was over as Toronto scored the game winning run after a pick-off throw got past Eric Chavez, who had shifted to first when Teixeira left the game. The Yankees figure to use Nick Swisher, Casey McGehee, Chavez, and the newly-acquired Steve Pearce while Teixeira is on the shelf.

For the season, Teixeira is hitting .255 with an .813 OPS, 23 home runs and 81 RBI.
