Rafael Furcal Likely Out for Season

The St. Louis Cardinals are in the midst of the pennant race, but suddenly they may be without their all-star shortstop.

Rafael Furcal left the game in the sixth inning Thursday night after feeling a tingling and hearing a pop in his right elbow. According to reports, he is flying back to St. Louis to undergo an MRI, one that is expected to confirm a torn ulnar collateral ligament. If such confirmation is gained, Furcal will be headed for Tommy John surgery.

Daniel Descalso will likely be the new starting shortstop for the Redbirds, who may suddenly be regretting shipping Tyler Greene off to Houston earlier this month. Even if the Cardinals would like to look outside the organization for help, they’ll have less than 24 hours to add a player and still have them be eligible for the post-season roster.

The Cardinals have overcome a plethora of injuries already this season and managed to stay very much in the playoff race. This one will certainly challenge the depth of the roster.
