St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty has been diagnosed with a concussion, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He does, however, have a shot to play again this season.

Piscotty sustained the injury on a scary collision with Cardinals center fielder Peter Bourjos on Monday night. He was carted off the field and taken to the hospital, where all tests came back negative. He was kept overnight for further examination, and has been resting at the team hotel in Pittsburgh since.

Piscotty returned to the Cardinals dugout on Wednesday, but will seemingly be out for at least the remainder of the regular season. His bat will be missed in his absence, as the rookie has posted an impressive .310 average with seven home runs, 39 RBIs and 20 walks in 62 games this season. The silver lining, perhaps, is that a long-banged up Cardinals team has seen the likes of Matt Adams, Adam Wainwright, Jon Jay and Randall Grichuck return down the stretch, so they’re not nearly as dependent on Piscotty’s production now as this time in August.

Some suggest the rookie could return as soon as this weekend, which would be promising news for St. Louis on two fronts. For one, they’d be getting one of their hottest bats back in time for their divisional series, while a speedy return would also indicate Piscotty’s concussion is very minor. Regardless, it appears that a scary situation Monday is not as serious as it once appeared.
