Jeter Aiming for Monday Return

The Yankees have announced that Derek Jeter will play in two minor league rehab games this weekend before hopefully rejoining the club Monday when it begins its series against the Indians.

Jeter’s rehab increased today as he prepares for his weekend stint with the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate.  The captain took 60 swings Thursday and pushed himself for the first time, sprinting from base to base.

The 37 year old has been out since May 13th with a strained right calf.  New York originally planned on the shortstop returning after the minimum 15 days, but they’ve had to push it back a bit as Jeter wasn’t immediately cleared to resume baseball activities.

"“I had never done this before, so I didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “I’ve pulled muscles before, and in the beginning I was a little hesitant to do anything. But once you get over that, it’s just getting in baseball shape.”"

The Yankees received good news on two other starters recently, Phil Hughes and Bartolo Colon.  Each, like Jeter, is on the verge of returning to the club.
