Jose Reyes Returns to Mets

After making an appearance for the Mets Single-A squad last night, Jose Reyes is ready to return to New York Tuesday.  The Mets will activate their shortstop before they take on the Marlins this evening.

Reyes has been out since the beginning of July with a Grade 1 strain to his hamstring.  Though these are the least severe type of strain, the 28 year old was still forced to the sidelines for just over two weeks.

This weekend the 4 time All-Star progressed to the point where he was able to run the bases at full speed and take batting practice.  The Mets decided to send him on a short one game rehab assignment Monday before bringing him back.

Last night Reyes went 1 for 3 with a double while manning shortstop for the Mets Single-A affiliate.  GM Sandy Alderson and New York’s head trainer were among those on hand to monitor Reyes.  They decided they liked what they saw enough to pull their shortstop after 7 innings in preparation for Tuesday’s start.

Reyes will be the first of what the Mets hope are 2 big roster moves this week.  David Wright is also on minor league rehab assignment, and the club hopes to activate their third baseman Friday.  It would mark the first time the Mets had their Opening Day left side of the infield intact since the middle of May.
