Grady Sizemore to Miss 4 to 6 Weeks After Surgery

It’s pretty rough when learning you’re missing 4 to 6 weeks is actually good news.

Grady Sizemore underwent surgery Thursday to fix his sports hernia he sustained earlier this season.  Cleveland expects their center fielder to miss a little over a month of action while recovering.

Sizemore released a statement following the short procedure.

"“The injury which resulted in today’s surgery has been bothering me since the slide in May. Knowing the two areas are related and also learning my knee condition is not serious gives me peace of mind going forward that I can finish the season healthy and help contribute to an exciting pennant chase.”"

Sizemore and the Indians were very concerned after he had to be removed from Sunday’s game against the Orioles.  Sizemore appeared to injure his knee while legging out a double and after testing it left the field.  Cleveland placed the 28 year old on the disabled list the next day.

But it turned out that the knee injury wasn’t a serious issue, and instead most of his pain was a result of the hernia.  So while a month off is certainly a significant chunk of time, it beats missing the rest of the season as Sizemore was forced to do last year.

While Sizemore’s been out, Ezequiel Carrera has taken over center field duties for the Tribe.  The 24 year old has been with the Indians for 13 games this season, going 7 for 27 over that span.

2011 marked Carrera’s major league debut and the outfielder’s on his second stint with the club this year.  While in the minors, Carrera hit .288 while scoring 63 runs and swiping 35 bases in 81 games this season.
