Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer is reporting that the Cleveland Indians have placed starting pitcher Roberto Hernandez Heredia, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, on their restricted list. Heredia was arrested in his native Dominican Republic last week for using a false identity.
Heredia’s move to the restricted list was expected following the news of last week’s arrest. While on the Indian’s restricted list, Heredia does not count against Cleveland’s 40-man roster and will not be paid. Heredia also cannot sign with another club while on the list.
Cleveland decided to pick up Heredia’s $7 million option earlier this offseason, but the club avoids paying the right-hander anything while he’s on the restricted list. The Indians do not know when Heredia will be available to return, as he will first have to sort out his visa issues in the DR.
As is usually the case with identity swaps involving international players, Heredia not only changed his name but also reportedly lied about his age. Entering the offseason the Indians had been lead to believe that Heredia was turning 28 in December, while it’s now being reported that he’s actually 31.
The Miami Marlins handled the Leo Nunez/Juan Carlos Oviedo situation the same as the Indians are dealing with Heredia. After it was determined that Oviedo was playing under an assumed name, the Marlins placed their closer on the restricted list. Miami extended him a contract this offseason, but they will not begin paying the right-hander until he resolves his visa issues and is removed from their restricted list.
Since learning of Carmona’s arrest, the Indians have traded for right-hander Kevin Slowey. It was reported last night that Cleveland may remain on the hunt for starting pitching, as the club has been tied to free agent veteran Roy Oswalt.
