Victor Martinez Undergoes First Knee Surgery

Since news broke of Victor Martinez’s anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, the Detroit Tigers prepared for the worst.  They figured they’d be without Martinez for the 2012 season, knowing the injury was severe.  This caused there to be little hubbub when it came out that Martinez had actually injured his knee worse than originally thought, as the slugger’s recovery timeline basically remains the same.  The only difference will likely be felt by Martinez, who now has to endure not one but two knee surgeries.

During his meeting with Dr. Richard Steadman Friday, scheduled as a second opinion, Martinez learned that his injury was more severe than originally diagnosed.  On top of blowing out the ACL in his left knee, Martinez also damaged his medial and lateral meniscus.

For those of us that don’t practice medicine, all this really means is that Martinez has to go through two procedures instead of one.  One has already been completed and was said to be a success (aren’t they all?).  Friday, Martinez underwent microfracture surgery and meniscus repairs.

Now, Martinez is awaiting reconstructive surgery on his ACL.  While two surgeries sound worse than one, Martinez is still expected to be ready to go by Spring Training 2013.
