Roy Oswalt Rumors: Oswalt Open to Pitching Anywhere
After months of non-stop rumblings, you’re probably going through what’s known as Roy Oswalt rumors withdrawal. No need to fear, we have your cure in the paragraphs below. That’s right, Oswalt is back in the news, as Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reported yesterday that the veteran free agent is “now telling teams he’ll play anywhere”. As Crasnick points out, until recently, Oswalt was focused on landing closer to his Mississippi home. This offseason, the Cardinals, Rangers, Red Sox, Phillies and Reds have all been the teams most frequently tied to Oswalt.
Crasnick added that Oswalt is still likely looking at returning in June. Before yesterday, many assumed the reason for this was the fact that Oswalt and his agent were under the impression the right-hander could receive nearly as much as he’s being offered now to pitch for half of a season. While this could still be a large factor, Crasnick said that another reason June is being targeted by Oswalt is because his children will be out of school by then. This will allow Oswalt to take his family wherever he ends up going.
Crasnick ended his string of tweets by stating that only time will tell if anyone will be interested in Oswalt.
Initially, when Oswalt said he would be holding out until closer to mid-season before signing, many expected him to stick to his short list of clubs he’d be willing to sign with. Now, if Oswalt is truly open to pitching anywhere this summer, the 34-year-old shouldn’t have a difficult time finding work. Once injuries and ineffectiveness take their toll over the first half of the season, contenders in need of pitching will be lining up for Oswalt, assuming he stays healthy and in pitching shape.
