Thursday, New York Mets third baseman David Wright was cleared to resume play. Wright, who had suffered a fractured pinky earlier in the week, was said to be a game-time decision for the Mets prior to Friday’s contest against the Philadelphia Phillies. Not only did Wright not suit up for last night’s game, but the Mets are now saying that he could require a trip to the disabled list.
Wright has been cleared to play, but it’s up to him to decide when he’s ready to return at a capacity in which he will help and not hinder the Mets. That time apparently hasn’t come yet.
Wright made it clear that he’s not afraid of playing through pain but that this situation is different. Wright said he “functionally can’t grip a bat or grip a baseball”. While he’s willing to suck it up and play through pain, Wright doesn’t feel that he isn’t merely “banged-up” this time. Wright said that it would be “stupid” if he went out and played for the Mets; that he would in fact “be hurting the team”.
The Mets have said that they will wait until today to make a decision on whether or not they’re placing Wright on their DL. If Wright is forced to miss an extended period of time due to injury, the Mets are expected to use Daniel Murphy as their regular third baseman.
