Who could be targeted:

1. Right-handed power hitter

The Mariners lineup is very lefty heavy, with Mike Zunino the only regular who swings from the right side of the plate. Adding another righty to the mix could help provide some balance to the lineup and simultaneously address another need. Numerous players could potentially fit this mold, which could give the team options at the deadline.

2. Alex Rios

Charlie Spencer-Davis at Sodo Mojo actually proposed this idea a few days ago and it isn’t a terrible though. Rios has his faults, sure, but adding him to the mix would bring an instant upgrade for the Mariners offense in right field. Rios would provide some power, a threat on the bases, and could give the team some protection for Cano in the lineup with a little more experience than Kyle Seager. His contract also carries a team option for next season at $13.5 Million, which may be a reasonable sum for what he’d bring to the table. It’s just unclear if the Rangers will move him within the division.

3. Josh Willingham

Willingham figures to be on his way out of Minnesota at season’s end as a free agent and the Twins aren’t in contention, so there’s a chance they could move him now. He’d provide an upgrade to the lineup in one of the outfield corners and may even be able to handle first base in a pinch if needed. He also likely won’t cost as much as some other options would. If he can remain healthy the rest of the season, he could be a solid addition to the Mariners lineup regardless of the role he’s thrust into.
