Who could be targeted:

1. John Mayberry Jr.

Mayberry is hardly a big name that’ll change the Rangers’ fortunes single-handedly. He is, however, a 30 year old with some power who can handle multiple positions – specifically the corner outfield and first base. Mayberry may prove to be an upgrade over Pena the rest of the way at first and could still bring value off the bench next season. He’ll be under team control at least two more seasons and likely won’t cost a great deal to acquire.

2. Ian Kennedy

Texas has multiple pitchers that will be coming back from injury next season, but could stand to add an experienced arm into the mix considering Colby Lewis may be allowed to walk via free agency at season’s end. Kennedy hasn’t been able to regain the form that lead to his strong 2011 season but can still provide value, eat innings, and could add some leadership to what is really a relatively inexperienced Rangers rotation. San Diego is believe to be looking to move multiple players on their roster and Kennedy could potentially be had at a reasonable cost.

3. Chris Colabello

Perhaps an usual name to list here, but one that would likely prove to be an improvement on this roster. Colabello is still fourth on the Twins in RBI, with 30, despite having spent the bulk of June back at Triple-A. It seems likely that he doesn’t figure into Minnesota’s plans moving forward but he could play a role in Texas – giving him a chance at proving enough that he’ll earn a job for next season.
