It was reported a week ago here on Call to the Pen that the New York Yankees were in talks with general manager Brian Cashman about his contract. Well, it was announced Friday morning that they have come to an agreement.

Cashman will be remaining with the club through the 2017 season. Cashman signed a 3-year contract to serve as both Senior Vice President and General Manager of the team.

Cashman, 47, has been at his post longer than any GM in Yankees’ history and longer than any other GM in the league behind only the San Francisco’s Brian Sabean and the Oakland Athletics’ Billy Beane.

He joined the Yankees organization when he was just 19 as an intern and has worked his way up to the top. It took him 12 years but Cashman was named to the general manager’s position in 1998 and led the team to ten straight playoff appearances.

Overall the Yankees, under Cashman’s guidence have only missed the playoffs three times in his 17 seasons as the teams GM and he’s been with the Yankees through five World Series, four in the GM role.

More from New York Yankees

Cashman has not yet been through a major rebuilding process with the team as general manager but he was with the club prior to this rebirth in the 1990’s. He now faces, however, taking an aging Yankees team and turning them into a new powerhouse team of younger players.

Derek Jeter‘s retirement signaled the end of an era for the Yankees. Some were skeptical at first that Cashman would still be the right man for the job moving foward, but he’s been so successful being at the helm of the team that there was no way that the Yankees could let him walk without a chance at reviving the team.
