The Toronto Blue Jays have signed outfielder Chris Heisey to a minor league contract, according to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi. Heisey will report to AAA Buffalo.

Heisey, recently released by the Dodgers, will be playing to prove he’s a viable fourth outfield option for Toronto at the big-league level. He hit an underwhelming .154 in 26 at-bats for Los Angeles in 2015, though he also had twice as many walks (eight) as hits (four) in 34 plate appearances, leading to a much better .353 on-base percentage. Heisey also hit .236 with 14 home runs and 37 RBIs in 63 games with the Dodgers’ AAA affiliate.
Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopolous said Tuesday that the club was looking for pitching and outfield help, and Heisey could prove to be a cheap fix to the club’s problems with outfield depth. While he’s never put up overly impressive numbers at the big-league level, the 30-year-old was a regular contributor with the Cincinnati Reds from 2010-2014. If he can produce with Buffalo, Heisey could ultimately prove to be a good source of speed and plate discipline off the bench for Toronto down the stretch.
