The Texas Rangers announced on Monday that they’ve signed outfielder Drew Stubbs to a minor league deal. Stubbs will report to AAA Round Rock and is hitting in the two hole for the Express Monday as the designated hitter.

Stubbs was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies on Friday after struggling to a .216 clip with an equally unimpressive .286 on-base percentage through 114 plate appearances this season. He failed to duplicate the successful 2014 campaign that landed him a $5.83-million salary in arbitration over the winter, though the Rangers will hope the 30-year-old can return to similar form.
Stubbs will provide the Rangers with much-needed depth with Josh Hamilton seemingly headed back to the disabled list and an already-struggling Leonys Martin playing through an injury at Round Rock. While he could potentially get a call-up sooner, a decent showing at AAA likely makes Stubbs a lock to be a September call-up when rosters expand next week.
