Parent, who spent 13 seasons in the majors as a catcher with seven different teams, arrived in Chicago prior to the 2012 season and was expected to be a mentor for current manager Robin Ventura. Ventura’s staff has drawn criticism after high expectations following a flurry of moves during the offseason were not realized. The White Sox have not reached the postseason since the 2008 season and have had just one winning season under Ventura.
“I’m accountable for what I had to do,” Parent said in a phone interview with the Chicago Tribune. “I thought I did a pretty good job at this. If it wasn’t enough, that’s fine.”
Prior to joining the White Sox, Parent spent a short tenure in the Philadelphia Phillies organization as a minor-league manager. He has retired from the game of baseball before, both as a player and a manager, but said to the Tribune that he wants to stay in the game.
“That’s what I do,” Parent said. “I retired (before). Being retired was boring.”
