Mark Buehrle to make final appearance for Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, retire

Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reports that Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Mark Buehrle will retire after making his final MLB appearance on Sunday. Buehrle is expected to be left off Toronto’s postseason roster, so he will throw two innings to eclipse the 200-inning mark for a 15th-straight season before hanging it up.

More from Toronto Blue Jays

In three years with Toronto, Buehrle has amassed a 40-27  record with a 3.79 ERA across 603.2 innings. He also played a season in Miami, but made his name during his 12 years in Chicago. There Buehrle threw two no-hitters, logged 161 wins and pitched to a 3.83 ERA in 2476.2 innings. He made four All-Star appearances with the White Sox (in addition to another with Toronto), winning three of his four career Gold Glove awards and receiving Cy Young votes in 2005. He also led the league in innings pitched twice.

Buehrle is the latest of multiple elite pitchers from the last decade to walk away from the game this offseason, as Barry Zito and Tim Hudson also threw their final pitches within the last week. Position players Aramis Ramirez, possibly Torii Hunter and others could join them as well in the coming weeks.

As it pertains to Toronto, Buehrle seems out of the playoff picture with David Price, Marcus Stroman, R.A. Dickey and Marco Estrada composing their four-man rotation. Drew Hutchison will also be contributing out of the bullpen, and will serve as a long relief man/spot starter if necessary, making Buehrle’s services not needed.
