Toronto Blue Jays’ Brett Cecil attempting to return for potential World Series
One week ago, Brett Cecil was pitching for the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 2 of the ALDS. He left that game with what John Gibbons called a “pretty significant tear in his calf.” Pretty much everyone assumed that the injury would end Cecil’s season.
However, two days ago John Lott of the National Post reported that Cecil is throwing again. It is still unexpected that Cecil will return, and even if he could he wouldn’t be eligible to join the postseason roster until the World Series.
Cecil began the season as the Jays closer, but was removed rom that role in June. Rookie reliever Robert0 Osuna took over that responsibility, but Cecil was still a valuable part of Toronto’s bullpen. He threw 54.1 innings finishing with a 2.48 ERA. His 11.60 K/9 rate was the second highest of his career, and he dropped his BB/9 rate to a career low (2.15).
