David Ortiz got a new tattoo in honor of him being elected to his tenth career All-Star Game.

The Boston Red Sox will be well-represented in next week’s MLB All-Star Game. The Red Sox have four players in the starting lineup, (Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Mookie Betts and David Ortiz), which is just one player less than the Chicago Cubs, who have a whopping five players starting.

Ortiz, who is retiring after this season, will be making his tenth appearance in the event, and his first since 2013. While some players are elected to the All-Star Game in their final season as a way to honor a great career, Ortiz has earned his way onto this roster.

His .337 batting average is second overall in the American League, finishing just behind Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros, while his 1.106 OPS leads the AL. He also has 20 home runs, which puts him in a tie for seventh overall in the league.

After earning this tenth All-Star appearance, Ortiz decided to honor himself with some new ink.

This new tattoo was certainly earned as Ortiz has defied time by having a career season at the age of 40. He is helping the Red Sox make another playoff push in an attempt to win his fourth World Series and go out on top of the game of baseball as one of its best.

More from Call to the Pen

Ortiz began his career as a member of the Minnesota Twins in 1997, but was unable to find much success with the club. He was released after the 2002 season and joined the Red Sox for the 2003 season. The rest is history.

Ortiz is a legend in Boston and will go down as one of the greatest and most beloved athletes to ever play professional sports in the city.

The images of him leading the comebacks against the New York Yankees throughout the 2004 ALCS will live on forever in Red Sox lore, with there is still room for more memories in October of this year.

Ortiz is in the starting lineup for next week’s All-Star Game, so he will not have a chance to do anything toward the end of the game, but he will surely make his mark in the first few innings. The tattoo should serve as added motivation.
