St. Louis Cardinals: Accusations against Carlos Martinez are likely bogus

SAN DIEGO, CA - SEPTEMBER 6: Carlos Martinez
SAN DIEGO, CA - SEPTEMBER 6: Carlos Martinez

St. Louis Cardinals ace Carlos Martinez may have some explaining to do. Not a right way to start the season for the Redbirds, that’s for sure. But, are these allegations true?

St. Louis Cardinals All-Star pitcher Carlos Martinez finds himself in the midst of a legal battle, according to reports from BND.com. Martinez and a group of friends allegedly physically assaulted a man outside of a strip club about four years ago in St. Louis.

"The suit filed by plaintiff Andrew D. D’Angelo alleges that he was drinking at a bar in St. Louis on July 4, 2014, when he had a verbal confrontation with a group of men, including St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez and late Cardinals player Oscar Taveras."

D’Angelo apparently suffered a broken back, racking up $100,000 in medical bills in the process. We live in a country where people are innocent until proven guilty, but if these allegations are indeed true, it’s an indication of the lack of maturity of Carlos Martinez — who has displayed inconsistency on the baseball diamond. However, this situation could be something entirely different.

It’s possible this whole case could be a cash grab. Why wait four years to bring this to the spotlight? Something seems suspicious here, that’s for sure. Martinez could be in the middle of a get rich quick scheme, which is a shame. Time will tell.

Other reports are that the defendant was drunk himself. If so, how would he know for sure that it was Martinez and Taveras who “jumped” him? The duo may have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Martinez’s agent agrees, claiming these allegations as “false” and that the St. Louis Cardinals ace will make a public statement once the dust settles.

The best way to proceed in situations such as these is let it play out thoroughly before making final judgments. It’s possible that both Carlos Martinez and Oscar Taveras were responsible for this violent act. Another scenario is they were present when it went down. Or, this guy is a complete loser and is being opportunistic, making all of it up. Odds are, the latter is the likely scenario, where the best way to make a quick buck these days is to accuse a celebrity of a crime.

Now, this is the last thing the St. Louis Cardinals need before the season starts. They have enough to worry about already in trying to catch the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers in the standings. Hopefully, the truth is revealed quickly and Carlos Martinez can focus his full attention on being the Cardinals’ ace.
