For the third season, we at Call to the Pen are going to provide an opportunity to discuss the MLB draft as it happens. We will be updating the selections live on this post as they happen, and we will have discussion in the comments section of this post throughout the night as the first day of the MLB draft takes place!
We have had plenty of MLB draft coverage here at Call to the Pen leading into the draft, including weekly mock drafts from co-editor Benjamin Chase. For review, here are those:
The first two rounds will be this evening, Monday, June 4th, starting at 7 PM Eastern. Then tomorrow, you can follow along on MLB.com starting at 1 PM Eastern as the draft continues, completing rounds 3-10. The final rounds of the draft, through round #40, will take place in rapid-fire progression on Wednesday, beginning at 11 AM Eastern.
You can look forward to a post on Tuesday before round 3 kicks off, evaluating the best players still available to open day #2 of the draft. Then look out on Thursday for a significant piece we will have with a review of every team’s draft, reviewing best picks from each day of the draft for each organization. There will also be multiple other smaller reaction pieces coming as well as CTTP makes sure you have all the MLB draft coverage you could ever possibly want!
We will put the entire first round on this first page, then move to a new page for the comp rounds and competitive balance picks, another for the second round, and finally, one for the comp picks and competitive balance picks after the second round.
First Round
1. Detroit Tigers
RHP. Auburn. Casey Mize. 1. player. 63. The Tigers kept it smart and drama-free, picking the guy that they had been rumored to for nearly 3 months.
2. San Francisco Giants
31. The Giants went away from the rumors of making a deal at this pick, going with the guy who many figured there. Now it will be interesting to see how they handle having Bart and Buster Posey together.. C. Georgia Tech. Joey Bart. 2. player
3. Philadelphia Phillies
3B. Wichita State. Alec Bohm. 3. player. 6. Phillies went chalk as well, grabbing the top college hitter this season with tons of power. Not sure if he’ll stick at 3B, but he’s got a shot to play corner outfield.
4. Chicago White Sox
5. Cincinnati Reds
Florida. Jonathan India. 5. player. 61. Surprise here as Singer was a big favorite of the Reds. Have to wonder if he put out a big signing bonus number to fall out of this pick. India seems to be a luxury pick for an org with Suarez and Senzel already.. 3B
6. New York Mets
With the college bats they preferred all gone, the Mets chose to go high school. Rumors had them talking heavy to Noah Naylor as well.. OF. Waukesha West HS (WI). Jarred Kelenic. 6. player. 3
7. San Diego Padres
7. player. 127. Padres preferred Weathers over many other high school arms for his combination of floor and ceiling and left-handedness.. LHP. Loretto HS (TN). Ryan Weathers
8. Atlanta Braves
player. 17. The Braves wanted him badly, but they weren’t sure if they could get a deal done as Stewart had fairly high bonus demands. Obviously they made that work!. RHP. Eau Gallie HS (FL). Carter Stewart. 8
9. Oakland Athletics
OF. Oklahoma. Kyler Murray. 9. player. 96. Incredibly off the board here. The A’s shocked everyone. Murray has all the tools – a lightning quick bat, power, incredible speed, but very, very raw. He will play football at Oklahoma this fall and also play baseball. Huge surprise, especially this high.
10. Pittsburgh Pirates
4. Swaggerty was considered right along with Madrigal as the top college player coming into the spring, and he’s shown fair, but he did scare off a few in the top 5. Interesting to see him to the Pirates with their full outfield in their system at many levels.. OF. South Alabama. Travis Swaggerty. 10. player
11. Baltimore Orioles
11. After some hard work in the offseason to condition his body, Rodriguez had an incredible spring. He’s a great fit here.. RHP. Central Heights HS (TX). Grayson Rodriguez. 11. player
12. Toronto Blue Jays
13. Miami Marlins
13. player. 82. Scott jumped up draft boards as he showed off his incredible athleticism with elite defense and speed and a body that projects to add power.. OF. Plant HS (FL). Connor Scott
14. Seattle Mariners
14. player. 62. Would have been my guy for them if I hadn’t mocked him earlier in my last mock of the spring. Gilbert finished his spring strong and has a very good collection of pitches.. RHP. Stetson. Logan Gilbert
15. Texas Rangers
15. player. 95. Winn was in play very early on, and he makes a tremendous selection for the Rangers here. He has very good balance in a pair of breaking pitches and a fastball. High floor arm, but with a high ceiling as well.. RHP. Orange Lutheran HS (CA). Cole Winn
16. Tampa Bay Rays
16. player. 21. Many said Liberatore’s money desires were the reason he slipped as he was definitely one of the top overall pitchers in the entire draft. Great pick for the Rays!. LHP. Mountain Ridge HS (AZ). Matthew Liberatore
17. Los Angeles Angels
player. 102. I mentioned in the mock today that the Angels had been coming strong after Adams if he would sign with them, and he obviously was willing to work with them.. OF. Green Hope HS (NC). Jordyn Adams. 17
18. Kansas City Royals
player. 7. Big time deal for the Royals here to get Singer to fall to them. His financial number likely had something to do with it, so the Royals’ bonus pool made a big difference.. RHP. Florida. Brady Singer. 18
19. St. Louis Cardinals
Sandra Day O'Connor HS (AZ). Nolan Gorman. 19. player. 32. Gorman has incredible power to his swing. He did struggle some with keeping his body in shape this spring, but if he can keep that under control, the power is incredible.. 3B
20. Minnesota Twins
player. 2. One of the strongest and most powerful hitters in college baseball this season, carrying the Oregon State team while Madrigal was out. He has a much better hit tool than many see.. OF. Oregon State. Trevor Larnach. 20
21. Milwaukee Brewers
SS. Santiago HS (CA). Brice Turang. 21. player. 76. Considered among the top draft picks in the entire draft before the spring, he didn’t do anything to cost himself, just didn’t really step forward. He projects as a quality defender with contact over power for now but room to grow.
22. Colorado Rockies
108. Rolison has plenty of talent, a guy who figured into the top 10 with multiple organizations, so getting him here was a good get for the Rockies, but surprised they passed on Seigler.. LHP. Mississippi. Ryan Rolison. 22. player
23. New York Yankees
…and the Yankees made the Rockies pay, taking a player that they scouted heavier than anyone else, but one of the most unique players in the draft as a switch-hitter and switch-pitcher.. C. Cartersville HS (GA). Anthony Seigler. 23. player. 43
24. Chicago Cubs
9. Surprising pick here by the Cubs with a number of arms on the board that they were heavy on. Hoerner is a guy who does fit with the abiliy to be flexible around the infield and likely outfield as well.. SS/2B. Stanford. Nico Hoerner. 24. player
25. Arizona Diamondbacks
Matt McLain. 25. player. 8. The Diamondbacks and McLain have been strongly connected for roughly 2 months, and I mentioned that they would possibly pick him here if they weren’t sure they could get him to #39.. SS/2B. Arnold O. Beckman HS (CA)
26. Boston Red Sox
27. Washington Nationals
Denaburg had some biceps issues this spring, but when he was on the mound healthy, he was tremendous this year. Injuries never scare off the Nationals, though, so this is not a surprising pick.. RHP/C. Merritt Island HS (FL). Mason Denaburg. 27. player. 90
28. Houston Astros
1B/OF. Clemson. Seth Beer. 28. player. 135. Beer is a very impressive player for his performance, but he’s struggled with wood bats when he’s had a chance and his defensive struggles are very real. It’s a surprising pick by the Astros, but he checks a lot of their boxes.
29. Cleveland Indians
30. Los Angeles Dodgers
player. 71. Tremendous fastball velocity, good build, and a great slider to pair with the fastball. He has a very repeatable delivery as well. This could end up a very valuable pick if he’s handled right by the Dodgers.. RHP. Brandon HS (MS). J.T. Ginn. 30
