New York Mets minor leaguer Tim Tebow has earned at least one accolade during his baseball career, as he has been named to the Eastern League All Star squad.

Typically, when one looks over the All Star teams in the minor leagues, it is a good indication of the talent that a team has in its pipeline. If that is indeed the case, then New York Mets fans could take solace in the idea that the future will be in good hands. After all, five members of the AA Binghamton Rumble Ponies were named to the Eastern League All Star squad, showcasing some of the talent the Mets have for the future.

Of those five names, there was one that truly stood out. Yes, the most famous minor leaguer in baseball, Tim Tebow, was named to the All Star squad. And yes, it is that Tim Tebow.

More from Call to the Pen

There is no questioning that Tebow has made strides at AA. He has produced a .261/.335/.398 batting line, hitting five homers and 12 doubles in 236 plate appearances. Tebow has been on fire in June, one of the hottest hitters in the minors during his current run of success. It seems to be a matter of time until he gets promoted to AAA, leaving him just one step away from the majors.

However, there are still plenty of holes in Tebow’s game. While he looks more like an actual baseball player these days, he is still swinging as hard as he can and hoping for the best. He has struck out 88 times in those 236 plate appearances, which comes out to a 37.3% whiff rate. Tebow is also mediocre at best in the outfield, looking slow as he tracks fly balls.

Is that really the profile of an All Star in the minors, a game that typically showcases the top talent in that level? To be honest, no. However, that is not entirely what the All Star Game is about. It is a place for fan favorites and the greats of a generation to appear on the diamond together, at least in the majors. No one can say that Tebow, for his struggles on the diamond, is an unknown. Wherever he goes, the fans follow.

One can certainly say that Tim Tebow does not deserve his spot in the Eastern League All Star squad. However, as the New York Mets minor leaguer is the most famous player in the Eastern League, his place on the roster is understandable.
