The non-waiver MLB trade deadline is just over a week away, and Tigers rumors are swirling. Could Mike Fiers, one of the Tigers’ most logical trade chips, soon be pitching for the Boston Red Sox?

Over the offseason, the Detroit Tigers took a chance on bounce-back candidate  Mike Fiers, signing him to a reported one-year, $6 million deal. The move has truly paid off for the Tigers. Now, his solid performance has put him in the Tigers rumors as the MLB trade deadline nears.

Through 19 starts, Fiers has gone 7-6 with a 3.49 ERA (125 ERA+) and a 1.24 WHIP. With struggling ace Michael Fulmer now on the disabled list and lefties Matthew Boyd and Francisco Liriano battling through rough patches, it is possible that Fiers may have now emerged as the most attractive trade target in the Tigers’ starting rotation.

Over the weekend, Buster Onley of ESPN tweeted that the Boston Red Sox were one of a number of teams checking out Fiers. The Red Sox were also able to get a front-row look at Fiers, when he tossed 6.1 scoreless innings against them on Saturday while striking out six.

Obviously, the Red Sox already have a solid rotation with David Price, Rick Porcello and, of course, ace and Cy Young candidate Chris Sale. Furthermore, Brian Johnson has also been doing nice work in the rotation. However, the Red Sox could use some help at the back end of the rotation with lefties Drew Pomeranz, Eduardo Rodriguez and Steven Wright currently on the DL.

While Pomeranz will return on Tuesday, it is worthwhile to note that his numbers when healthy have not exactly been great this season. Through eight starts, he has posted a 6.81 ERA. He had a great season last year, however, going 17-6 with a 3.32 ERA through 32 starts. Still, there are obviously no guarantees that he will be able to revert to his 2017 form.

The Red Sox are currently the best team in baseball with a record of 70-31, and adding a piece like Fiers to make their rotation a bit deeper for the postseason would certainly make sense. On the Tigers’ end, rolling the dice on Fiers has proven to be a very good move. The Tigers may very well be able to deal him within the next week and get a piece back in return who could help them throughout their rebuilding process if they play the Tigers rumors of teams being interested right.
