New York Mets: Tim Tebow to have surgery, out for the season
In an announcement that caps a rough weekend of injury news for the New York Mets organization, the Mets announced on Monday that their highly-publicized AA outfielder would be missing the rest of the season with a broken hamate bone.
The Tim Tebow experiment has actually been a fairly good one for the New York Mets in its second season. Many questioned the team in 2017 after Tebow hit .226/.309/.347 between the Mets’ two A-ball levels.
For most players, that sort of performance would not merit a promotion to AA, but there Tebow was on minor league opening day, donning the Binghamton Rumble Ponies’ uniform as a AA player in the New York Mets organization.
Surprisingly to many, this season was not just “not completely terrible”, Tebow was actually fairly good. He made the Eastern League All-Star team, though that was at least partially on promotion as there were players with better numbers that could have been in the spot, but him being on the team was not a total farce, as he was one of the better outfielders that had been in the Eastern League for the full season.
We discussed Tebow early this year, giving a scouting report on him and discussing the chances he had at making the major league team in 2018. Then, as his season progressed, we noted his positive season for Binghamton.
Now the chance that the downtrodden New York Mets fans had to see something unique, exciting, and perhaps even fun at the end of a season that has been nothing short of horrific as a fan to watch is gone. Tebow won’t be coming up to the major league club to finish out the year, and recovery from a hamate injury typically stunts power for a period of time after the player returns to the field, and with that being Tebow’s primary offensive tool, it could be rough for him at the plate.
Next: Mets gonna Mets with Cespedes
There has been no substantiation to the rumor that the New York Mets marketing department has painted their offices black and are flying their Mets flags at half-staff. Certainly, it would be good to give such a person a hug today.
