The New York Mets have completely mishandled Yoenis Cespedes in his latest injury. We should not have expected anything different.

At some point, the Wilpon’s angered the baseball gods. They have seen injury after injury, each one more bizarre than the last. Tim Tebow, likely the only reason people would go to Citi Field in September, broke his hand swinging a bat and is out for the year. Noah Syndergaard contracted hand, foot, and mouth disease. David Wright has seemingly stumbled over every black cat and broken every mirror he could find. Then, there is the New York Mets handling of Yoenis Cespedes.

After missing over two months due to leg issues, Cespedes was activated from the disabled list. For one game. Yes, he hit a home run, but he also mentioned that he has an ongoing issue in both heels, one that surgery will need to fix. That surgery has an eight to ten month turnaround time. The Mets knew nothing of this. Of course they didn’t.

After two more days of confusion, the Mets finally came to their senses. Cespedes is back on the disabled list, something he should never have been taken off of in the first place.

More from Call to the Pen

The loss of Cespedes obviously hurts the Mets this season. He appeared in just 38 games, but posted a solid .262/.325/.496 batting line, hitting nine homers and six doubles. Of every semi-regular piece in the Mets lineup, only Brandon Nimmo has a higher OPS+ than Cespedes. When healthy, he can certainly be a piece that can help carry the Mets offensive attack.

However, he is not healthy, and he has not been for months. How it could be that Cespedes was aware of the diagnosis of his heels, the calcification that is happening, and the need for surgery, but not the Mets front office, is beyond astounding. Then, but having Cespedes go through rehab, and activating him from the disabled list for a single game, they only moved back the timeframe for when he can be available in 2019.

Of course, nothing less should be expected. The Mets front office has become almost laughable at this stage, a towering tribute to incompetence that begins from the Wilpon’s on down. Why wouldn’t they turn Cespedes’ injury into another farce? It is fitting with their performance this season.

dark. Next. Tebow to have surgery, out for year

The New York Mets have completely mishandled Yoenis Cespedes. Although, we should not be surprised. The Mets are gonna Mets, after all.
