Averaging 24 homers over eight campaigns, Santana also recorded his second-highest RBI total with 86: one shy of his 2016 mark. However, he batted .229 for 2018 but .256 in the second half. And Santana, according to Cot’s Baseball Contracts –different from the piece linked– has $35.5 million left for two seasons.

For the Yankees, Double D, they need a left-hitting first sacker with power for a right-heavy lineup. Yes, that’s the same reason the Phils had inked Santana, and they only moved him to keep the younger Maikel Franco and Hoskins. In other words, one corner infielder had to go.

Hitting stats:

  • Santana, 32.5:
  • 2016: 158 Gms., 658 PA, .259, 34 HR, 87 RBI and a .366 OBP.
  • 2017: 154 Gms., 667 PA, .259, 23 HR, 79 RBI and a .368 OBP.
  • 2018: 161 Gms., 679 PA, .229, 24 HR, 86 RBI and a .352 OBP (Phillies).

Concerning Ellsbury, he has roughly $47.3 million and two summers remaining on his pact. But he hasn’t proven he can play after missing ’18 with a hip injury, and he currently has no position. But because New York has been trying to unload him for around three years, they would gladly welcome a salary dump.

Hitting stats:

  • Ellsbury, 35:
  • 2015: 111 Gms., 501 PA, .257, 7HR, 33 RBI and a .318 OBP.
  • 2016: 148 Gms., 626 PA, .263, 9 HR, 56 RBI and a .330 OBP.
  • 2017: 112 Gms., 409 PA, .264, 7HR, 39 RBI and a .348 OBP.

After two decent 162s, Kahnle’s 2018 featured a disabled-list stint for shoulder inflammation and a demotion to Triple-A from June 4 to Aug. 3. And even though his arbitration estimate is for $1.5 million with one option remaining, he almost certainly wouldn’t make either club.

Pitching stats:

  • Kahnle, 29:
  • 2016: 29 Gms., 27 1/3 Inn., a 2.63 ERA and 4 Holds out of 5.
  • 2017: 69 Gms., 62 2/3 Inn., a 2.59 ERA and 15 Holds out of 21.
  • 2018: 24 Gms., 23 1/3 Inn., a 6.56 ERA and 2 Holds out of 3.
  • 2018 1st half: 8 Gms., 9 Inn. and a 7.00  ERA.
  • 2018 2nd half: 16 Gms., 14 1/3 Inn. and a 6.28 ERA.
  • 2018 AAA: 25 Gms., 24 2/3 Inn., a 4.01 ERA and 4 Holds out of 4.

As for the Phillies, they would go from owing $35.5 million for Santana to $47.3 million for Ellsbury. Basically, they would increase payroll by $11.8 million for an aging veteran who has to prove he’s healthy. But, Double D, it’s a fantastic swap for the Yanks!
