MLB Player Power Rankings (5): Luke Voit, New York Yankees

Week-4 Stats: 0.867 SLG | 0.564 wOBA | 263 wRC+ | 0.8 fWAR

Like Trevor Story (see the previous slide) Voit sports a higher fWAR than some of the players that are ranked higher. This could be due in part to a high K%; Voit has the highest K% of any player in the top 5.

Nevertheless, Voit is the Yankees MVP for week-4 and remains perhaps the greatest steal of the 2018 trade deadline. Brought over in a deal from the St. Louis Cardinals last season, Brian Cashman and the Yankee brass were convinced that Voit’s swing was being wasted in the Cardinals’ farm system.

Sporting a career launch angle that averages 11°, Voit has managed to mash 8 Hrs this season. Per Jason Collette, writer for RotoWire and ESPN SweetSpot Network:

That’s some pretty amazing company.

This season, Luke Voit places 19th in AL in fWAR. He’s tied for third place in HR (8) while sporting a phenomenal .397 wOBA.

While Greg Bird continues to recover from a plantar fascia tear that will keep him sidelined 4-6 weeks, Voit will get yet another opportunity to prove that this tear he’s on is not a fluke. Until then, he remains something of a diamond in the rough.
