After the Brewers won the Thursday opener of their six-game series in Cincinnati, Wade Miley evened the score with a four-hitter Friday, Cincinnati winning 6-1. Eugenio Suarez homered and drove in three runs for the Reds.
The two teams split Saturday’s doubleheader, Lorenzo Cain’s sacrifice fly getting Omar Narvaez home with the winner in the top of the ninth. It was Cain’s third RBI; he had already homered and singled. Cory Knebel got the victory and Josh Hader the save in relief of Adrian Houser.
In the second game, spot starter Lucas Sims gave Cincinnati eight strong innings and Mike Moustakas drove in three runs, the Reds winning 6-2.
Cincinnati took Sunday’s game 5-3 thanks to a pair of well-timed home runs. With Milwaukee leading 2-0 in the sixth, Nick Castellanos hit a two-run game-tying home run. One inning later, Nick Senzel’s three-run blast gave the Reds a winning margin in an eventual 5-3 outcome. Amir Garrett got his fourth victory in relief of Sonny Gray; Raisel Iglesias allowed a ninth-inning run but earned the save.
The Cubs emerged from their lengthy funk to take the final three games of their four-game visit to San Diego., surviving Fernando Tatis Jr.’s one-man assault to do it. On Friday, Tatis hit three home runs and drove in all five of his team’s runs, but Javier Baez’s grand slam gave Chicago a 15-5 victory. Baez, Anthony Rizzo, Jason Heyward, and Daniel Descalso all had three-hit games in support of Jose Quintana, 4-4.
The Cubs took Saturday’s more sedate game 4-1, breaking a 1-1 tie with Kris Bryant’s three-run home run off reliever Drew Pomeranz in the top of the ninth. Bryant’s blast made a winner out of Kyle Hendricks, 6-4. Tatis homered and drove in two more runs Sunday, but the Cubs emerged this time with a 7-5 win. Kyle Schwarber homered twice and drove in three runs, and Baez also had three hits.
