Boston Red Sox 2020 Draft Analysis: Is Blaze Jordan the Future?

Boston Red Sox third pick in round 4 of the draft: Pitcher, Jeremy Wu-Yelland

Here the Red Sox took their first pitcher of the draft in 6’2″ lefty Jeremy Wu-Yelland out of Hawaii.  Yelland was used primarily as a reliever at Hawaii and I would expect his development to continue in the pen. In the shortened 2020 season at Hawaii, he had an ERA of 0.69 with 16 K’s in 13 IP.

He features a 3 pitch mix of fastball, slider, and changeup. His fastball velocity is mostly mid-90s, but he has topped out at 97 mph.

Any pick in the MLB draft is difficult to project their future and especially after the first few rounds. Yelland’s most possible role is as a long reliever for the Red Sox in the future.

Boston Red Sox fourth pick in round 5 of the MLB draft: Pither, Shane Drohan

With their final pick, the Red Sox took another left-handed pitcher in Shane Drohan out of FSU. Drohan was more of a full-time starter in college than Yelland.

In 2018-19 Drohan had an ERA of 3.66 with 71 K’s in 51.2 IP. The Red Sox will certainly look to develop him as a starter in the minors in hopes that he could possibly be a rotation arm one day.

Boston is certainly not known for its development of pitching, but maybe with the new head of Baseball Operations, Chaim Bloom, both the drafting and development of pitchers will improve.

Bloom and the Tampa Bay Rays have had incredible success in developing pitching and positional talent in the past. Maybe in his first draft in charge, Chaim Bloom will have helped revamp the Red Sox farm system.
