What’s next for Justin Verlander?

In addition to the numerous questions surrounding the Houston Astros’ chances in the upcoming postseason, Justin Verlander has plenty of unknowns himself. The future Hall of Famer is 37-years-old and set to hit free agency following the 2021 campaign.

According to the Astros’ announcement, Verlander’s rehab will be approximately 12-14 months, meaning he won’t be back until the 2022 season. That puts Verlander at age 39.

While Verlander delivered a World Series title to Houston in 2017, how far do these loyalties go? By 2022, Houston’s young core of Jose Altuve, George Springer, Carlos Correa, and others will still sit in the prime of their careers. Houston will need to address it’s pitching staff in the meantime. Zack Greinke is 36-years-old and the staff will need reinforcements.

Will the Houston Astros offer Justin Verlander a one-year deal to extend his career? Does he retire and make his way to Cooperstown? Or will Houston deal some of its talented positional depth to sure up the pitching staff? The questions remain.
