Almost exactly a year ago, Atlanta Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna was the victim of domestic abuse. His wife had been arrested and charged with domestic battery after hitting him in the face with a soap dish. She had entered a not guilty plea and was handed a restraining order, with the story fading from the news cycle.
Now, nearly a year later, Ozuna is back in the news for domestic violence. This time, he has been arrested, charged with aggravated assault strangulation and misdemeanor battery – family violence.
Atlanta Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna facing serious trouble
Not only is Ozuna facing his own legal trouble, but he is also facing trouble with Major League Baseball. The league will be opening its own investigation as they do in every one of these cases. Even if he avoids legal ramifications and the charges are dropped, MLB could still come down with the hammer if they find he violated their domestic violence policy.
As it stands, the Braves will not feel any immediate effect from this investigation. Ozuna is currently on the Injured List, having broken two of his fingers earlier in the week. Ender Inciarte had taken over in left as the Braves outfield depth continued to be weakened by injury.
Obviously, there are issues at play other than Ozuna’s loss on the diamond. There will need to be a thorough investigation, both in Georgia and by MLB. It is also important to make certain that the victim, or victims, are safe and secure.
This is also a disappointing arrest for other reasons. Ozuna himself had felt the effects of domestic violence and knew what those were like. To turn around and commit similar acts shows that those lessons were not taken to heart.
