Toronto Blue Jays suffer massive blow with George Springer injury
The Toronto Blue Jays suffered a massive blow to their offense on Tuesday as outfielder George Springer was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left knee.
Springer, 31, has suffered a number of injuries with the Blue Jays this season, as he has only played in 49 games for them, but his impact will have a massive impact on the team.
George Springer is one of the best offensive players for the Toronto Blue Jays
Despite his injuries, George Springer has been one of the best offensive players for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021. He has hit .269/.362/.610 with an OPS+ of 159, which is second-best on the team behind Vladimir Guerrero, Jr.’s 174.
Springer is one of the most veteran players on the Blue Jays as well, as recent acquisition and outfielder Corey Dickerson, is the only position Blue Jays player with more service time than Springer.
Springer was day-to-day with a mild left ankle sprain that was suffered on Saturday when the Blue Jays were in Seattle. Further tests showed that his ankle would not need further testing, according to Gregor Chisholm of The Toronto Star on Twitter.
However, TSN’s Scott Mitchell reported on Twitter that Springer came to the team and complained of knee soreness. An MRI showed that he had a left knee sprain.
Mitchell also reported that Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo would not speculate on a timetable for Springer’s return but they are hoping that the injury won’t be season-ending.

If it is, in fact, season-ending, it would be a massive blow to the Blue Jays, who are currently four games back of the second American League Wild Card spot. At least in the interim, the Blue Jays will use the platoon of Dickerson and Lourdes Gurriel, Jr. in left field, Randal Grichuk in center field, and Teoscar Hernandez in right field.
Against the Washington Nationals tonight, the Blue Jays will not have the designated hitter so they will have Dickerson in left field, Grichuk in center field, and Hernandez in right field.
The Blue Jays are still a good team without Springer but his injury could cost them a shot at the playoffs.
