Lock in Isiah Kiner-Falefa

Isiah Kiner-Falefa is the type of player that any team would love to have. He is also exactly the type of player that the Texas Rangers should lock up to a long term deal.

A look at his overall statistics would make it seem as though Kiner-Falefa is a mediocre player at best. He posted an 85 OPS+ with eight homers and 25 doubles in his 677 plate appearances, both of which are career highs. However, he was the second most valuable player on the team, posting a 4.0 bWAR in 2021.

That is due to his strength defensively. After winning the Gold Glove at third base last season, the Rangers moved him to short. He thrived at the new position, leading AL shortstops in assists, double plays, and range factor while saving 13 runs. It would not be a surprise to see him earn another Gold Glove this season.

His defensive versatility goes beyond those two positions. Kiner-Falefa has also spent time at catcher and second in his career, making him a valuable player from a defensive standpoint. With a decent enough bat and an excellent glove, he is someone that the Rangers can build their infield around.

The Texas Rangers need to start identifying pieces of their core. Locking in Isiah Kiner-Falefa would be a start.
