3) New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are a team that is very unremarkable in a lot of ways. Part of that is due to injuries. Their current rotation is comprised of this:

  • Gerrit Cole
  • Jordan Montgomery
  • Luis Severino
  • Jameson Taillon
  • Nestor Cortes, Jr.

Montgomery missed nearly all of 2018 and 2019 due to injury. Taillon missed nearly all of 2019 and all of 2020 due to injury. Severino has combined to pitch a total of 18 innings in the majors since 2019. Cortes, Jr. made the most starts he has ever made in the majors in 2021 (14).

Castillo has never been on the IL in his MLB career and since 2018 (his first MLB season), he has made 31, 32, 12 (shortened 60-game season), and 33 starts. The Yankees need that reliability for a #2 starter. Another team that needs that reliability is across town.

4) New York Mets

The New York Mets might have the best rotation in baseball … if they are ever healthy.

Jacob deGrom is injured yet again and he will be out for, at least a few weeks. Max Scherzer is injured too, putting Opening Day in jeopardy for him. Their third starter, Chris Bassitt, has never made more than 27 starts in a season since he made his debut in 2014, largely due to injuries.

Their fourth starter, Taijuan Walker, has also never made more than 29 starts in his nine-year career due to injuries.

So, sure, they have a good rotation but none of them have been healthy in recent years.
