5) Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels haven’t had a healthy rotation in a decade nor have they had anybody notable in their rotation outside of Shohei Ohtani in a decade.

They signed Noah Syndergaard to be their #2 starter, but he is from the Mets (aka he’s been injured a lot). He has pitched a total of two innings in the last two seasons. After Ohtani and Syndergaard, their six-man rotation has Michael Lorenzen (who has been injured a lot), Patrick Sandoval, José Suárez, and top prospect Reid Detmers. Not exactly Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz out there.

6) Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners signed 2021 AL Cy Young Award Robbie Ray to bolster their rotation. But after that, the Mariners have Marco Gonzales, Chris Flexen, Logan Gilbert, and Matt Brash. Gilbert had an ERA+ of 89 in 2021 and Brash has never pitched above Double-A.

Flexen was very good in 2021 but he never made more than nine starts in a season until 2021. He also had a career 8.07 ERA prior to 2021 so he definitely could regress in 2022.

Even Robbie Ray had a 92 ERA+ in 2019 and 2020 so he could regress. Castillo would be the most proven arm in that rotation if he joined them. The Reds and Mariners also already came together on the deal to send Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suárez to Seattle so why not make another deal?

Dealin’ Jerry Dipoto has been fairly quiet on the trade market with the exception of that and the Adam Frazier deal in November so maybe he is itching to make another trade.
