22. Detroit Tigers (last week: 20)

Sure, you know all about Miguel Cabrera’s 3,000th hit by now. Did you know about how the Colorado Rockies always seem to be in the wrong place when it comes to that history? Did you know about the 13 pitchers who have given up a home run in the only time they have ever faced Cabrera?

OK, outside of Cabrera, did you know that, along with Cabrera’s history-making first-inning single, the Tigers had 17 other singles out of 20 total hits in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday? Detroit’s 18-plus singles in a game was just the fifth time since the start of the 1950 season that had happened for the Tigers.

21. Philadelphia Phillies (last week: 15)

Philadelphia gets better at the plate as the game goes along. Through the first 14 games of the season, the Phillies were slashing .296/.375/.507 in 236 plate appearances from innings six through nine. Compare that to the .232/.297/.355 slash line in 286 plate appearances from innings one though five and you’ll see why opposing bullpens are having issues keeping Philadelphia at bay.

20. Chicago Cubs (last week: 19)

In 21 career games before Saturday, Cubs first baseman Alfonso Rivas had never had more than one RBI in a single contest. In Chicago’s 21-0 demolition of Pittsburgh, Rivas went 3-for-5 with five RBI and also hit just his second career home run. The outburst meant that Rivas had hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games, posting a .406 batting average during that stretch.

19. Minnesota Twins (last week: 24)

Don’t overlook what Twins starting pitchers have done so far this season. Through the team’s first 14 games, their starters ranked first in the American League in ERA (2.73), second in batting average against (.206), and first in WHIP (0.98).

18. Oakland Athletics (last week: 23)

All of those new faces in Oakland are combining to turn the page for the franchise. So far this season, Oakland has used 16 rookies. Compare that to last year’s total number of 13 and you’ll see how youth is already being served in the Bay Area.
