Frankie Montas

The St. Louis Cardinals rotation needs help not only this year, but beyond as well. That may play into their plans at the trade deadline.

In theory, there will be some internal improvements. Jake Flaherty has finally returned from the Injured List and the hope is that Steven Matz will return in the somewhat near future as well. However, they still need to find another piece for this year and beyond.

Frankie Montas would make perfect sense based on that logic. He is under team control through next year and would fit as another top of the rotation caliber arm for the Cardinals. Although he has been somewhat inconsistent over his career, as evidenced by his recent struggles, he is still going to be highly coveted in the trade market.

The problem with Montas is going to be his cost. The Cardinals tend to be loath to part with their top prospects in any trade, even when they acquired Nolan Arenado. However, if they feel that Montas is the piece that could put their rotation over the top, that reluctance to trade those top prospects could disappear.

Frankie Montas would be a perfect fit for the St. Louis Cardinals. It is a matter of whether or not they feel he is worth the cost.
