The Texas Rangers‘ disappointing 2022 campaign has claimed yet another victim.

On Tuesday, the Rangers made the decision to fire manager Chris Woodward. Then, Wednesday morning, president of baseball operations Jon Daniels followed, as Ken Rosenthal reported that Daniels had been dismissed.

Jon Daniels leaves long history with Texas Rangers

It is a move that one could see coming. Although Daniels had been in the organization since 2002, Chris Young had become the guiding voice of the organization. His moves, whether in free agency or the trade market, have been with the goal of ending their rebuilding process soon. That also involves having a front office that is together on the same page.

This exit should not change how Daniels is regarded in the organization. He has an impressive legacy that he is leaving behind, having built a roster that reached the postseason five times between 2010 and 2016. Daniels was the Baseball America Executive of the Year in 2010 as the Rangers made their first World Series appearance in franchise history.

However, that success had faded. The Rangers have not even been above .500 since their last trek to the postseason in 2016, let alone close to actually contending for a playoff berth. Daniels had moved from the Rangers general manager to his most recent role as Young was brought in to oversee their rebuilding process.

While the Rangers are still rebuilding, progress was expected this year. While their .448 winning percentage is their best since 2019, being this far under .500 and on pace for 90+ losses is not enough. The Rangers were going to clean house, especially after Woodward was let go. No matter how much ownership may like Daniels, he is a symbol of the old regime. It was a matter of time.
