Boston Red Sox reportedly seeking a second baseman
Xander Bogaerts is still the Boston Red Sox top priority this offseason. However, it does not hurt to have a backup plan in place.
That may be the case as GM Meetings begin. According to reports, the Red Sox are looking to acquire a second baseman just in case they are unable to convince Bogaerts to stay in Boston.

Should Bogaerts leave, the reported plan is to move Story back to short and find another second baseman. The problem is that there is not much available in free agency at the position as Jean Segura and Brandon Drury are the clear top of the market.
This had always felt like the plan. Story had signed a six year deal worth $140 million to come to Boston during the 2021-22 offseason, a move that felt as though it was a way for the Red Sox to protect themselves should Bogaerts opt for greener pastures. That was especially the case when Story stated his preference to remain at short during his time in free agency.
It is just a matter of finding that player for the keystone. The Red Sox have plenty of holes on the roster outside of either second or short, making their resources all the more precious. Likewise, they are not going to spend on one of the top free agents at short unless it involves bringing Bogaerts back.
This is something that Red Sox fans had to see coming. Chaim Bloom is remaking the team, turning the roster into something more in his image. Those last remnants of the 2018 championship squad are beginning to disappear to other teams, something that will be even clearer should Bogaerts depart and Story takes over at short.
The Boston Red Sox are ready to move on if Xander Bogaerts departs in free agency. According to reports, they are shopping for a second baseman.
