It has been over a week since Carlos Correa was supposed to sign with the New York Mets.

Since then, all that is known is that the deal is being held up by Correa’s medicals. The Mets are looking to add protections to the contract in case of injuries while Correa reportedly refuses to restructure his contract. This leaves everyone at the impasse where these conversations have been for the past few days.

New York Mets have turned over new leaf under Steve Cohen

Right now, the speculation is that a deal will get done. At some point, Correa and Boras will realize that a third trek into free agency this offseason would be a disaster and that no one will give him the type of contract that the Mets are offering. Jon Heyman listed three reasons as to why that will be the case, including the relationship between Boras and Mets’ owner Steve Cohen.

But all that anyone has right now is speculation. The Mets have been absolutely silent as to any negotiations with Correa to bring him on board, with Cohen not saying anything after his celebratory statement about the signing. Even Boras has been relatively muted, at least as far as one can expect from him.

It is a distinctly different strategy than the Mets had under the Wilpon’s. Far too often, it felt as though they were using the media to negotiate, leaking out details that they wanted in the public eye so sway perception to their side.

There is a time and a place for everything. That includes sharing details of these negotiations with the media and those outside of the discussions. That time will happen once a resolution has been reached as nothing can be gained from sharing those details until then. It is something that Cohen and the Mets have mastered.

The New York Mets have been silent about Carlos Correa since his contract was put on hold. That silence is best for everyone involved.
