With the St. Louis Cardinals looking to replace a position inside the television booth, it appears the franchise will be leaning on a very familiar name to take the open spot and call the Cardinals for 2023 and beyond.

Chip Caray reportedly leaving Atlanta Braves broadcast for position with St. Louis Cardinals

An announcer with the Atlanta Braves since the 2005 season, it has been reported that Chip Caray will leave that position to take the open position with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals had a vacancy after Dan McLaughlin left his post with Bally Sports Midwest after nearly 25 seasons following an arrest for felony persistent DWI in early December.

Caray’s grandfather, Harry, called Cardinals games for 25 years before being known to a new generation as the voice of the Chicago Cubs through WGN TV. Now, it appears that Chip, who was born in St. Louis, will be carrying on his grandfather’s legacy under the Gateway Arch.

Harry once again was a part of a baseball broadcast during this past year’s Field of Dreams game when a hologram of the famous broadcaster led the seventh inning stretch. While the stunt gathered a lot of negative press, Chip was glad to see his grandfather enjoying the game again.

“Look, my grandfather meant a lot to a lot of people in Chicago, and he just had a great time and fun at the ballpark,” he said as a part of this article. “And to have him be a special part of that coming out of the corn, as it were, with the backdrop of Dyersville, Iowa in that movie, it was really, really special and really, really well done. I was pleased.”

It is also being reported that it is Caray’s decision to leave the Atlanta broadcast to pursue the job in St. Louis.

Last season with Bally Sports South, Caray and broadcast partner Jeff Francoeur called games on two separate occasions from the bleachers, using it as a way to try to give fans a different perspective on the game and see how broadcasters adjust on the fly during broadcasts. It’s unknown if anything like this will be tried as Caray begins his new chapter in St. Louis.
