Let’s take a look at some of the latest MLB news and notes, including tidbits on the New York Mets, Houston Astros and San Diego Padres.

Houston Astros news: No movement on contract extension talks with Jose Altuve

Speaking on FanSided’s The Baseball Insiders podcast, Altuve, who is scheduled to be a free agent after the 2024 campaign, said that there has been no recent talks on any kind of contract extension that would keep him in south Texas beyond that date.

You can see Altuve’s thoughts on the situation and more in the interview here.

While nothing may have happened yet, it would certainly be a shock to see the Astros and Altuve come together on some kind of deal to make sure he remains in Houston. Perhaps that will come this offseason.

MLB news: New York Mets land David Stearns in front office

There have been whispers for some time that Stearns, who previously served as the general manager for the Milwaukee Brewers, would land in Queens with the Mets. Now those rumors have become reality as Stearns and the Mets have reportedly come together on a five-year deal that will allow him to help rebuild a Mets team that was one of MLB’s biggest disappointments in 2023.

San Diego Padres news: Rich Hill, Yu Darvish won’t be back in 2023

On Tuesday, the Padres placed Hill, one of their acquisitions at the MLB trade deadline, on waivers and also announced that Darvish would be shut down for the rest of the season because of a stress reaction in his elbow.

Hill posted a 9.27 ERA in 22.1 innings with San Diego, proving to be a move that hurt the team more than helped it.

Darvish, however, will be back with the Padres in 2024, part of a deal that keeps him in San Diego through the 2028 campaign. That’s one of the reasons why San Diego is in no rush to bring him back during a lost season.
